About Gulf Coast Claims
The Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF) was created by BP and the Obama administration as the official way for individuals and businesses to file Gulf Coast claims for costs and damages as a result of the BP oil spill of April 20, 2010. Kenneth Feinberg is the administrator and is responsible for all decisions made concerning the processing of Gulf Coast claims. For those that have filed Gulf Coast claims with GCCF, most have reported that it is confusing and difficult to determine who and what will be paid. Many have received denials or have received a fraction of what their claim was for. Of the $20 billion that BP has allocated for Gulf Coast claims, only $6 billion has been paid out as of November 2011. According to Feinberg, the problem is that around 80% of the claims made do not have the proper documentation.
Recently, the GCCF has again changed their methodology for payment by agreeing to pay more for Gulf Coast claims submitted by those that made their living fishing for shrimp or crab. However, they have also set new stricter standard to be eligible for compensation.
